In His Own Words... Harry Marshall

Harry Marshall

I’m originally from Louisville, Kentucky, a lot of people think I was born and raised in Bowling Green. Moved to Owen Valley, Spencer, whenever, I was 10. Loved the quietness. Loved the peacefulness. Real quiet out there Bowling Green, Indiana. Great place to live. People are nice. People welcomed me.

Family of course Mom and Dad –love them both. Dad’s probably one the most hardest working guys or man I’ve seen ever in my life. I have three brothers Antonio, Jordan, Brandon and one older sister, Carolyn. All of us played basketball. Three of us still play basketball now. So a very competitive family and you know… we learned from each other and we back up each other. I think without family I really wouldn’t be here. I really wouldn’t be anything in life.

I played tennis in high school, ran track in high school. Ran the 100, 4 by 1, high jump and long jump. Those are just things after basketball season to keep some shape, jumping and any thing involving jumping back in high school I loved to do. Tennis, I played with my brother just to play with him so he would have someone to play with. Played football in middle school into my freshman year concentrating on basketball and just keeping in shape and working hard at that.

Tennis is a very delicate and really I think the key is finesse. You got to be light on your feet. Got to be able to move, cut and be in shape. Tennis is a really hard sport. Tennis definitely helped on my footwork and track helped on conditioning my legs.

In Her Own Words - Women's Basketball Trainer Michele Landis

Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio…when I was a senior in high school my family moved to San Diego, California and I began working on an ambulance. I became a certified EMT. Then, I realized I wanted to be an EMT but for sports…for athletic teams. Someone introduced me to the field of Athletic Trainer.

I attended San Diego State University as an athletic trainer student. After I graduated there I left to become a Athletic Trainer Grad Assistant at the University of Hawaii. I was there for five (5) years. Then I left to work at a D-2 school in Texas, West Texas A & M. I was Assistant Athletic Trainer there for three (3) years then I was hired here as the Associate Athletic Trainer in the fall of 2007.

This job entails administrative responsibilities as the associate as well as being the head athletic trainer for women’s basketball. That’s how I came all the way back. I just looked to return to the Midwest. I’m a mid-western girl born and raised. I loved living the beach life and doing all that…but my family is in Dayton and I wanted to be close to my family so I found this job at Indiana State. It just seemed perfect. I applied for it and was lucky enough to get it.

When I was in high school I played soccer. Soccer and Student Council President …did all that kind of thing. Initially, when I was in high school, I wanted to be a hotel / motel manager. Then I took the avenue to become a n EMT and then I went from there and discovered athletic training. I didn’t have any athletic training experience in high school at all,… it all came in college.

About the season, I thought we improved. Got a little better. It didn’t show with one win but…. It didn’t show like we wanted it with more than one win. I feel we should have won at least three games. We made a little improvement defensively. Offensively we made some improvement after the bye-week when we shored-up our offensive line. We still have to get our quaterback situation settled and we need some more play makers on the perimeter.

I think next year we can be a middle of the pack Missouri Valley Conference football team.

We’re still young. Now we’re getting to that stage where we’re crossing into–not all underclassmen…but some upperclassmen because all these sophomores are going to be juniors with another year in the weight-room. Some of the kids that played for us this year as freshmen have an off season and another chance to get bigger, stronger, faster. I think you’ll see an improvement next year in wins and losses. But, then again, that’s just setting the stage for years 4, 5 and 6…when we’re really going to make a difference.

This wasn’t going to be a 2 year fix. This isn’t a 3 year fix, a 4 or even a 5 year fix. This is something that—- When it’s been a situation like it is, you’ve got to be in it for the long haul. These kids are. We’re planning on winning some games next year. I think we can win some games, make a slash and be a middle of the pack team and the next year move up from that.

My home is Dayton, Ohio. I live with my father, step-mother and four little brothers. I’m the one, when little brothers messed up, I got in trouble for it. They’re all athletes…football and basketball players, all of them. I actually have a little brother at Bluffton that’s playing football. I’ve been playing football since I was 6. No other sports…just football. I played quarterback when I was younger but as I got older I played linebacker and Safety. I love it.

I just know the game and I love it. I’ve learned to love it. I like everything about it. I’m good at it. I usually know what’s coming at me before it comes. That’s always fun. I can call out the other teams plays before they even run them. Seeing their faces when I’m calling out their plays…that’s always fun for me.

I know a coach that coached here, coach Kenny Burris, and I also saw that they (ISU) was 0-11 and I wanted to be that piece. Get in here and turn this thing around or help turn it around. It took a long time but winning a game is the step. You got to win to turn things around. I feel like I definitely helped getting this thing going in the right direction. I think we can win more games before I get out of here.

My family is athletes. You can go to Chicago, my hometown, you can go anywhere in the city…you ask about Gates or the Gates family they know we’re athletic. I have two (2) brothers,…they played D-1 basketball; one (1) at Kent St. and the other at the University of California at Berkley. My sister was also a basketball player and ran track  My dad played basketball, football, baseball and all my uncles did also.  My mom, she played volleyball. My brothers got their athletic interests from my dad and I got athletic interest from my brothers. That’s basically where my sports background comes from.  They inspired me athletic-wise and how to handle myself off the field.  How to be a role model out I the community and handle myself and make smart decisions…. Because there’s going to be a spotlight on you just because you are an athlete. They taught me by telling me and I learned a lot by just their actions and any mistakes they might make…and they never made any big mistakes.

I was born in Stutzgardt, Germany. My mother was an Army recruit. I’ve lived in Washington for 3 years and Gary, Indiana with my Aunt for a little bit. Then I went to Merriville (Indiana) for 3 or 4 years. Played all the sports.  Went to Merriville High School my freshmen and sophomore years but felt they wasn’t going to give me any PT so I transferred to Portage High School in Portage, Indiana where I got the opportunity to play football. My mom was working 2 jobs to support me and her.  My senior year I broke my leg…and then a few weeks later my house burnt down. The community helped a lot.
